Starting an Art Vlog

I’ve been uploading random videos to my YouTube channel for a couple of years now. I’m getting more comfortable with the making of videos (and am so inspired by some of my favourite art vloggers Sandi Hester and The Unexpected Gypsy), that I want to try out uploading a weekly vlog, with some general stuff I’ve been doing in my studio.

So, ta-da! here is my first “vlog” style video. You can find my YouTube channel here. Please subscribe to my channel if you like it.

I mention some art supplies in the vlog, here’s what they are and where I got them:

Mediums:
Powafix Genuine Turpentine – I bought it at Hermanus Hardware
Zellen Refined Linseed Oil – from The Art Shop in Hermanus
Zellen Impasto Medium – from The Art Shop in Hermanus

Paints:
Zellen Zelcol oil paints in Veridian, Alizarin Crimson and Rose Madder – from The Art Shop in Hermanus and the wool shop (I can’t remember what it’s called) in the SPAR centre in Gansbaai

Brushes:
Daler Rowney Natural White Bristle Brushes – from The Art Shop in Hermanus

Looking for reference photographs for your painting practice?

What I love about Unsplash is that all of the photographs uploaded there are free to use, and I can share the images in my videos and show them here without worrying about being on the wrong side of copyright laws. This is the photograph that I’m using as reference for the second painting in the video above. It’s by Colette Allen.

Ideally, I’d love to have a fresh bouquet of flowers in my studio to work from, but I have a bit of a thing for painting wedding bouquets at the moment. There’s no way I would be able to afford to buy such fancy floral arrangements once a week, so I’m super grateful for the wonderful photographs available to use on Unsplash.

In my first vlog, I am working on two paintings that will be part of my biophilia series. Read more about the series in this blog post. See available work from this series in my online shop.
